Johnston County

Johnston County is one of the 10 North Carolina counties participating in Thriving Hearts. From now through 2030, Thriving Hearts will be working with the Johnston County Health Department to improve maternal health outcomes in the county. Our collaboration builds on current maternity practices and ongoing efforts to improve the quality of care for community members during the pregnancy and postpartum period. Johnston County is considered a medium county based on their number of births each year. Johnston has 2 Perinatal Community Health Workers (PCHWs) connecting patients and birthing persons to community resources.

PCHW Supervisor and LHD Champion, Johnston County

Mia Jones PA-C was born in Baltimore, MD. She attended The University of Maryland Eastern Shore, a Historically Black College & University (HBCU), and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology in 2006. She moved with her family to North Carolina that year and later attended East Carolina University’s Physician Assistant Program where she earned her Master’s Degree and graduated in 2010.

Not soon after graduation, she started her career in public health at The Johnston County Health Department in Smithfield North Carolina. She did not know it at that time, but working in public health would be her calling and she would ultimately spend 14 years and counting there. She sees patients in all of the clinics to include Child Health, Primary Care, Epidemiology, and Women’s Health. She works very closely with the Women’s Health clinic where she serves as the provider liaison. She has recently started a position overseeing patients in the Total Wellness Clinic geared to serving patients who are in need of important health maintenance and attending to quality gap services.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband, 2 children, 2 dogs and other family members. She loves going to the beach where she can hear the ocean and feel the sun, going to the spa for relaxing massages, and reading.

The Smithfield Rescue Mission exists to proclaim the love of Jesus for those who are homeless and in crisis. We do this by providing shelter, life necessities, and life-changing programs to break the cycle of poverty.

Women and Children’s Ministry

Our house for women and women with children is nestled behind tall oak trees, and situated outside of the city limits of Clayton and Smithfield, it provides an atmosphere of peace and healing for women and children in need.

Women are afforded the opportunity to get on the right track by spending a short time in our care, while they search for employment, seek needed benefits, reestablish relationships with family, and make preparations for living independently again.

Mothers with young children are shown healthy and positive parenting styles. Children are given love, attention, and time.

Blessing Baskets (Food Basket)

The rescue mission’s largest community outreach is Blessing Baskets. When a family or individual in need is referred to us, the mission gets right to work fillings boxes, bags, and baskets of food to take along when visiting folks in need if they are unable to pick it up here. The overflow of food given to the mission for those staying with us is used to help others in the community.
