What is the Thriving Hearts texting program?

Thriving Hearts is a program to help moms and babies stay healthy during and after pregnancy. It is supported by a group called PCORI (The Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute). To learn more about the Thriving Hearts texting program, check out the Frequently Asked Questions.

We are here to connect you with support during your pregnancy and the first six months postpartum. If you are eligible and you sign up, you’ll get texts about things like community baby showers, local events, and other resources for moms and families. You can also text back to our community health workers to ask about services and supports. We try to reply within two business days.

Signing up is your choice. If you do, you’ll be able to send and receive secure messages through our texting system.

Why We Offer This Texting Program

We want to help moms and babies stay healthy and well by sharing useful information and connecting families with local support.

What You Should Know

• It’s your choice: You don’t have to sign up. If you do, you can stop anytime.
• It’s free: You won’t be charged to join. However, standard message and data rates may apply. For instance, your phone company might charge you for texts if you don’t have unlimited texting, or for data if you click on links.
• You can get this information without signing up: The information we send out is posted on the Thriving Hearts web site here.
• How we text: We use a secure texting system to send health tips, event info, and updates.
• When we text back: We reply to texts Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern time (not on holidays).
• Who we are: This texting program is part of a research study in 10 counties in North Carolina.
• Health questions: You can ask general questions, but this service is not medical care. If you feel sick, have a medical question, or have an emergency, call your provider or 911. Information shared through the Thriving Hearts program is intended for educational and community outreach purposes only. Participating in the Thriving Hearts program does not establish and should not be construed as establishing a treatment relationship
• Minors: Our website and texting program are not directed to children under the age of 13. If you are between the ages of 13 and 18, and you choose to enroll in this texting program, please be aware that text messaging may not be completely private or confidential. If your parent, guardian, partner, or another person pays for or has access to your phone plan, they may be able to view text messages sent to or from your phone.

• Support from community health workers.

Possible Risks

• We encrypt your info, but like any text, email, or online service, messages may be stored by phone or internet companies, and they might not fully protect your info.
• If you lose your phone or change your number, please let us know. We aren’t responsible for lost or misdirected text messages.
• You are responsible for any texting or data costs.

Your Privacy

• Thriving Hearts works with Jacaranda Health to send and receive texts. The messages are encrypted and stored in a secure database.
• We save messages linked to your phone number so that our community health workers can follow-up with you.
• We plan to look at the questions that people ask over text to make the service better. To do that, we will keep records of your texts even after the program ends.
• Information you share with Thriving Hearts through the texting program may be shared with our partners, including Jacaranda Health, and might not be protected by federal privacy laws.
• By agreeing to participate in this program and communicate by text message, you understand and agree that text messages may be used to provide referrals to community support services, such as community events, food banks, or childbirth classes.
• If your parent, guardian, partner, or another person pays for or has access to your phone plan, they may be able to view text messages sent to or from your phone, including through billing records, shared accounts, cloud backups, or access to the device itself.
• In addition, messages and information shared through text messaging may be disclosed if required by law, including but not limited to situations involving suspected abuse or neglect, threats of harm to yourself or others, court orders, or other legal reporting obligations.
